Do you hear an Eco? Sustainability in Eyewear Fashion

Nina Mur Sustainable Eyewear from SPAIN

What is Sustainability? Sustainability by definition is the avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance. In other words, sustainability is the act of creating a society that is livable for future generations. There are many things that we can do as a society to preserve our natural resources and improve the quality of our world. For example, we can practice sustainability at home by recycling or reducing food waste. We can also upcycle, or creatively reuse unwanted products, which would reduce landfill waste significantly. Another way that we can take further steps into a more viable future is by becoming socially conscious consumers. Do you research! There are a large number of brands that are making a positive impact on the conservation of our planet. In the meantime, let’s observe three major brands in the eyewear industry that are eco-friendly: Lindberg, Nina Mur and Andy Wolf.

Lindberg

Oak Eyeglasses from Lindberg

The personification of Danish design, Lindberg is a brand that uses responsibly sourced materials in all of their eyewear. They specialize in Titanium, a metal that occurs naturally on the earth. Lindberg also uses other natural materials such as polymer derived from wood pulp and natural cotton fibers. Lindberg has always been innovative in the eyewear industry. In fact, they were the first brand to introduce a customization system at a time when glasses were mass produced and one-size fits all. The Lindberg Building System, as it’s affectionately called, was designed to allow consumers to create their own custom eyewear. Clients can choose from a variety of colors, lens shapes, finishes and so much more. There is something for everyone, whether you’re a minimalist or you’re someone who wants to make a statement, Lindberg is the brand for you!

Nina Mur

Nina Mur was created as an alternative to assembly-line production of eyewear. Their frames are made to order, in their Madrid, Spain workshop. Each frame is made of natural Birchwood from Finland. Nina Mur glasses are produced locally which benefits the local economy by creating jobs, reducing transportation costs and investing in the community. Although the brand is all about protecting the environment, that doesn’t hinder their creativity and innovation. Their glasses are truly distinctive and striking, to say the least. If you’re looking for something fashionable and creative, yet ecologically responsible, then Nina Mur is the perfect choice!

Andy Wolf

Quality, innovation and craftsmanship are just a few words used to describe Andy Wolf.  In 2006, Andreas Pirkheim and Wolfgang Scheucher started a small brand with a big vision. They design and create all of their frames by hand in their own factory. They take pride in being part of the process every step of the way. Just like Nina Mur, Andy Wolf’s frames are produced locally as well. They use raw and partially recycled materials in each of their frames. This just goes to show that you can be inventive while maintaining integrity. Andy Wolf is very expressive and transparent about their values, beliefs and the brand as a whole. Feel free to browse their website, I’m sure you’ll find a frame that fits your personality as well as your principles.
